About the Author
Wanda MacNevin grew up in Downsview, a suburban area in Toronto that includes the Jane-Finch community. As a single mother of three, she moved into public housing at 15 Tobermory Drive. There she began her volunteer work and became the first employee of the new Jane/Finch Community and Family Centre. Fifteen years later she took on the position of a community health worker at the new Black Creek Community Health Centre where she worked with teenage mothers, seniors, and grass roots resident groups. In 2003, she returned to the Jane/Finch Community and Family Centre and became the director of community programs. In 2017, York University awarded her an honorary Doctor of Laws degree for her life's work on behalf of the Jane-Finch community. She gave the convocation speech at that session to the graduating class of students. While working and living in the Jane-Finch community, she gained a great deal of experience along with a wealth of information that eventually she put into book form. Wanda has published two other books detailing aspects of her life in Jane-Finch: From the Edge: A Woman’s Evolution from Abuse to Activism (1999) and If I Only Knew…Stories of Teen Moms (2008). |
